Happy First Day of Spring! Sonny and I take a walk every day. Today at lunchtime we took a walk by Nixon School. Sonny wanted to know where all the kids were. I told him they were learning from home today. Sonny said, "That's so cool!" Walking is great exercise- try to get outside and get some fresh air every day! Please send me pictures of you walking outside with your family or your pet!

Pets are a great source of companionship and they love us unconditionally- which is great for our mental and emotional health! Be sure to take care of your mental and emotional health by taking time out each day for brain breaks and exercise breaks! Sonny and I are on our way to Horseshoe for our daily exercise break! (Yes, his paw is feeling better today!) Sonny loves riding in the car because it allows him to explore new sites, sounds, and smells! I hope you can get outside today and do some exploring too! |

Hi Nixon Families! This is my dog Sonny. He is very happy that I am at home and able to play with him! Sonny loves to exercise! Today we played "Fetch" with his football. His football is his favorite toy. Send me a picture of what you and your pet are doing for exercise to [email protected] Stay healthy and fit! Mrs. Martini March 18, 2020 Today Sonny and I went outside and played in the yard. Sonny enjoys being outside in the fresh air. We had running races in the backyard. Sonny is a very fast runner! Guess who won the race? Keep sending me pictures and videos of you exercising- I love to see what you are doing! Be well! Mrs. Martini March 19. 2020 MARCH 23, 2020 Welcome to Week #2 of Flexible Instruction Days! Thank you to all of the Nixon students who did such a great job sending in their PE Logs and pictures and videos to me last week! I love seeing all the fun and unique ways you are staying active! Be sure to check out this week's new exercise ideas added to the list of suggested physical activities to keep you motivated and moving! Sonny just wants to remind everyone about the importance of stretching before and after you exercise! This weekend Sonny and I went hiking and he forgot to do his warm-ups and to stretch beforehand. As a result, Sonny injured his front paw and was limping around all weekend! Stretching prevent injuries, improves our flexibility, increases blood flow to the muscles, reduces muscle tension, and stretching feels good! Make sure to include your daily PE warm-ups and stretching into your 30 minutes of physical activity on PE days! |

Poor Sonny! He is not very motivated today to do his exercises- it is very chilly and cloudy outside and all he feels like doing is curling up and resting in his favorite spot . He is being a couch potato! What can you do when you lose your motivation to get up and get moving? First, it is important that you choose an activity that is fun for you - this way it doesn't feel so much like exercise! Also, you can try and get someone to exercise with you, like your mom, dad, brother, or sister so that you have someone to support you. Another good idea is to change up the type of activities you do - new and different choices make exercising more interesting and enjoyable! Try one of these new and exciting youtube workouts for kids to get you moving and grooving today! |

Hi Everyone! Sonny wants to remind everyone the importance of staying hydrated especially
before, during, and after exercise! Water is the
best choice for quenching your thirst! Did you
know that when you are dehydrated you can
become fatigued, irritable, or get a headache?
Be sure to bring a water bottle with you
whenever you go out for exercise to remind you
to drink water regularly. Staying well hydrated
helps your body function at its best and helps you
to stay in tip-top shape!
***Don't Forget: PE Logs are due tomorrow! ***

Happy Friday Nixon!!! We made it through another week! Today Sonny and I did our favorite activity together- Walking! Did you know that Sonny gets a dog treat after every mile he walks? That is his special reward for doing such a great job exercising! How would YOU like to get rewarded for every mile you walk or run? Well now you can!
Starting next week you can join the Nixon Mileage Club- all you have to do is use a fitness tracker or map out a route around your neighborhood and then record how far you walk or jog each time you exercise on your PE Activity Log. For every mile you walk or jog, you will receive a "Footsie" charm when you get back to school!
Have a wonderful weekend! Mrs. Martini

Can you hear Sonny snoring? This is his favorite position after a long day of physical activity. Believe it or not, it’s important to get a good night’s sleep...every night. You won’t catch Sonny playing video games too late at night. His screen time is limited. Part of staying fit is to eat well, exercise daily and get plenty of sleep. Oh...by the way, your parents will also appreciate it when you get a good night’s sleep! Sweet Dreams!
Fun throwing & catching fact of the day:
The name ‘Frisbee’ is said to have originated from the Frisbie Pie Company’s metal pie tins that were used by university students as flying discs, and it is a trademark name owned by Wham-O, an American toy company, who bought the rights to the invention in 1957.

Yay!!! It's Friday!!! Today Sonny and I tried to do some strength training exercises, but instead of using weights, Sonny used his bones instead! When you are trying to improve your strength there are many activities you can do besides lifting weights. You can do push-ups, planks, ABC shoulder taps, sit-ups, stomach crunches, burpees, leg lifts, or squats. Even activities like climbing hills or stairs, or doing a handstand will tone and strengthen muscles.
Be sure to add some strength training exercises into your weekly exercise routine to keep you fit and healthy!
**Due Today: Don't forget to email me your weekly PE Log - I enjoy seeing what you are doing....and keep sending in those pictures and videos!!! Maybe YOU will be featured on the Nixon PE Website!!!
Here's the throwing & catching fun fact for Friday:
The farthest American football throw into a target is 50 yards and was achieved by Tyler Toney in Fort Worth, Texas, USA, on 23 January 2017.

Spring has sprung! Now is the perfect time to take your exercise activities outdoors! Whether you are practicing your kicking (K-1) or basketball skills (2-4) this week, try to spend as much time as you can outside enjoying the sunshine while it lasts! MB from 2R is a real Nature Girl! She loves spending time exercising outside with her whole family! Here she is with her family and dog Roxy (so cute!!!) taking a walk. In addition to walking, MB has been taking long nature hikes along the Columbia Trail, the Lake Hopatcong Trail, and Liffy Island. She also enjoys family bike rides (for 7 miles!), scooter rides, as well as working on her stick handling for ice hockey so she doesn't get rusty for when she can get back on the ice! Thank you MB for sharing your PE Log with me so I can see what you have been doing for exercise
and for staying so active with your whole family! Please send me a picture of what YOU have been doing for exercise - I would love to see you in action! And remember, for every mile you walk or jog you will earn a footsie charm when you return to school! Happy Trails! Mrs. Martini

- Hi Everyone! I hope you all are doing well today! As we continue with our basketball skills (Grades 2-4) let's try to remember a few key points about dribbling: 1) dribble using your finger pads...not your palms 2) dribble the ball waist high & 3) try to look around you as you dribble
- A few key kicking points (Grades K-1) are: 1) keep your eye on the ball when kicking 2) take a step with your opposite foot before kicking & 3) follow through with your kicking foot
- Today's student spolight is on AR in 3B. He has been doing an excellent job staying physically fit and active! He has been exercising 5 days a week for about an hour each day! Wow! That is awesome! As you can see, AR enjoys riding his bike (way to be safe by wearing a helmet!), practicing taekwondo, doing GoNoodle, playing outside, walking on his treadmill, and taking walks outside. AR even saw some bears while on his walk! I guess the bears are done with hibernating! He has also been remembering to do his warm-ups and stretching before his workouts, which is so important to prevent injuries. Keep up the excellent effort AR - YOU ROCK! Mrs. Martini

As we finish up this short week with basketball and kicking, try the best you can to do two things:
For Grades 2-4: Try to shoot some baskets if you have a hoop. Remember to hit the backboard for the lay ups and shoot over the front of the rim if you are shooting a set shot or jump shot. Can you make 5 layups in a row? 3 Jump shots in a row? For Grades K-1: How far can you kick a ball? As you become more familiar with soccer style kicking, remember to kick using your instep (laces part of your foot) and follow through.
Today's shout out goes to AL in KB who has been exercising everyday at home and sending me lots of pictures of what she has been doing! Here you can see her doing the Yoga "Tree Pose" which she learned in class. This is a great pose to improve your balance while you work on strengthening and stretching. She also likes to do the "Warrior 2" pose. AR has been doing all of her warm-up exercises, practicing her soccer kicking skills, riding her bike, throwing and catching a ball, playing tee ball, jumping on her trampoline, and even doing splits!!! Wow!! That is fantastic!!! I am so proud of you!!! Keep sending in those pictures AR - I love to see all the wonderful ways you are exercising!!! Have a great four-day weekend everyone!!! Mrs. Martini

This week we will begin a new focus for grades K-2 and for grades 3 & 4.
The objective for K-2 is: to control your body while performing dances and activities. Grades 3 & 4´s objective will be: to develop cardio-respiratory (BIG word!) endurance at home. In simpler words: K-2 have fun dancing, and grades 3 & 4 should try to get outside and run without stopping for ¼ mile or more (not just walk). If you have trouble running or jogging, try to walk for at least 30 minute
CHECK THE HOME ASSIGNMENT PAGE FOR NEW ACTIVITIES FOR YOU WEEKLY OBJECTIVE ...OR CREATE YOUR OWN ACTIVITY!!!
Today's featured student is ZM in 3B! Here he is doing his warm-up exercises! ZM has done an outstanding job of emailing me his PE Log every week! To stay active, he has been running outside, walking with his mom, and even doing a jog/walk for 20 laps! Great way to build up your endurance! He also enjoys doing yoga, dancing to a song, wall push-ups, and even gets his brother and sister outside and running with him! Way to get your whole family involved in staying fit! Keep up the awesome job ZM! If you would like to be featured on the Nixon PE Website, just email me photos along with what you have been doing for exercise to Mrs. Martini [email protected]

Happy Wednesday! To all 3rd & 4th graders: Just remember that endurance does not have to be about running only. Can you increase the number of jumps you can do with jump ropes before stopping? How many jumping jacks can you do before you get tired? If you ran or jogged yesterday, see if you can increase your distance today. Try to find a route in your neighborhood and map out either a ¼, ½ or 1 mile route. Make a log and for every mile that you walk/jog or run, you will receive a footsie token when you get back to school. To all Kindergarten & 1st graders: I would love to see a picture that I can post on my website or a video of you doing your favorite dance!
Today's all-stars are brothers! Hats off to LA of 4Mc and AA of 1Q! Here they are exercising together on their swingset! Looks like fun! LA likes building his endurance by going on his treadmill and exercise bike at home, as well as running outside with his dog, Rusty. AA really loves doing CosmicKids Yoga, riding his scooter, and exercising outside too! Great job boys sending me your PE Logs and photos, and staying healthy and fit! You are both doing an amazing job! Mrs. Martini
